Do birth mothers get paid to place their baby for adoption?

One of the most common questions we hear from birth mothers is: “Will I get paid to give my baby up for adoption?” There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding this topic. But to be very clear, the answer is NO - you cannot be paid to place your baby for adoption.

However, in Florida, birth mothers may receive financial assistance during the pregnancy and up to six weeks after birth as long as they are coming forward to make an adoption plan in a sincere manner. Some people wrongly consider this “payment,” but there is a big difference between being paid to place a child for adoption and receiving financial assistance to help cover reasonable living expenses while you are pregnant.

Reasonable living expenses can cover a variety of things such as:

  • Rent and Utilities
  • Food
  • Transportation to Doctor Appointments
  • Maternity Clothing
  • Phone service

There is an understanding that birth mothers may need some financial help during pregnancy for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, their pregnancy hinders their ability to work, other times they may not have the support of family or it may become difficult for them to continue to live in their current situation. For that reason, adoption agencies in Florida or the prospective adoptive family may cover living expenses for a birth mother during her pregnancy and for six weeks after birth. This assistance is meant to help birth mothers focus on having a healthy pregnancy during a trying time.

It is completely illegal and considered trafficking to accept money in exchange for giving your child for adoption in Florida. Whether you are a birth mother or an adoptive family, you should always check to make sure the agency you are working with is licensed to prevent this from happening. If you or someone you know has been offered any amount of money simply to place your child for adoption, you should contact authorities.
